CLUB INFORMATION

Mission Statement:

At Wanaka Snowsports Club, our mission is to foster a passionate and inclusive community dedicated to the enjoyment, development and excellence of snow sports.  We aim to provide support for all athletes of all ages and skill levels, promoting safety, sportsmanship, and a lifelong love for the mountains.  Through our events and partnerships, we strive to inspire and nurture the next generation of snow sports enthusiasts.

Club History

The Wanaka Ski Club was established in 1979 to cater for the social and wellbeing needs of local skiers, families and people who enjoyed the slopes of Treble Cone which was Wanaka’s only ski field.

As the club was developing it progressed from running local club ski events to entering Southern Districts alpine events and then to organising and officiating for FIS (Federation International) alpine ski race events . Currently, the club's Race Organising Committee organises 12 plus alpine race events annually. The athletes who compete range in age from 5 years to 80 plus and from beginner children to current FIS World Cup and Olympic athletes with between 1200-1500 "athlete starts"  from18 plus countries annually.

During the past 30 years various snow sports disciplines evolved significantly and the club morphed from the original Alpine Ski Club into the current snow sports inclusive Wanaka Snowsports Club.

Not only do we focus on our young members, we also facilitate snow sports improvement for our older members to enable them to continue participating in snow sports and enjoying the mountains with their extended families.

One of the club’s goals is to assist athletes to reach their full potential . Grants have assisted member athletes with training, travel and competition costs. During the 2000’s numerous WSC athletes represented NZ whilst showcasing our region on the world stage and winning numerous accolades. Beginning in 2002 members have competed in the Olympic Games, X Games, Freeride World Tour, Youth Olympics and various prestigious International Children’s events.  Members continue to represent NZ on the world stage by competing across a range of disciplines and events around the world.  Most recently, the 2024 Youth Olympic team included several Wanaka Snowsports athletes who won several medals.

Why should I join?

Joining the Wanaka Snowsports club has a range of benefits which cater for various skill levels across the various snow sport activities.   Our partnerships with local businesses provide access to a range of discounted items and services.   The club is passionate and supportive of all snow sports enthusiasts, big or small, young or old.  Members celebrate the club’s athletes success stories at their regular functions which provide social opportunities to build camaraderie with like minded skiers and boarders who share the love of the mountains and snow.
